If you like a bargain, and who doesn’t, then look no further than the local market in Ponte de Lima.

This historic market has been held in the same location, on the beautiful banks of the River Lima in the shadow of Ponte de Lima’s famous Roman bridge, since the year 1125.

Every second Monday you can browse the market stalls for an amazing range of goods.

From live chickens to fine leather goods, from beautiful local art work to tablecloths and everything in between.

For the foodies there is a seemingly endless supply of beautifully cured meats, spices, fresh seafood and other delicious local produce. Take them back to the Quinta and fire up the BBQ.

Keen fashionistas will not be disappointed either. The market sells original, handmade jewellery, handbags and shoes. And when you get home, no one at the party will have the same as you.

During our frequent visits to the market we have never returned home empty handed. The only problem is fitting everything into our suitcases.   Much of the art work and furniture in the villa has been purchased here.

The hustle and bustle of market day is an interesting way to meet with the friendly locals. You even pick up a few Portuguese phrases to help with the bartering. Never accept the first offer!

If markets are your thing, you will find them in towns all over this region including Barcelos, about 30 minutes from the villa, which is the biggest.
